The role of natural fibers in the carbon economy is rapidly growing, both literally and figuratively. Those in control of the growth, processing, and/or utilization of natural fiber materials will have a distinct advantage in global businesses worldwide. The potential and challenges for the efficient use of natural fibers will be discussed as it relates to the utilization of biomass through biorefinery products and natural fiber composites manufacturing.  This workshop will also discuss the role of bioenergy in manufacturing operations and guide forest and land management strategies.

James D. Holbery
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Richland, Washington

Dr. James Holbery is a scientist/principal investigator in the Energy and Environment Directorate at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.  He is a recognized expert in energy harvesting and lightweight materials. He is actively involved in the development of natural fiber processing and surface modification techniques, long fiber predictive engineering, and natural fiber reinforced composites.  Jim is an Adjunct Professor in the Wood Materials and Engineering Laboratory at Washington State University and in the School of Wood Science and Engineering at Oregon State University.
